“The Lasting Connection Between Home and School”

Together We Learn is a parent curriculum that is scientifically based and is crucial in teaching parents how to expose their children to high quality language and literacy environments. Together We Learn equips parents with a kind of “toolbox” for literacy containing vital materials, knowledge, and skills that infuses in parents a desire to want to be an integral part of their children’s learning. Thus, Together We Learn is the link that will make the lasting connection between home and school.

Lesson One – A Rapport Built On Trust

Rapports build on trust bridge families and school together. Professionals understand the responsibility to respect the individual differences of families. The words and actions used to convey the belief that parent’s opinions are valued and respected is core to a successful program. The Parent Mentor’s Guide along with this lesson is sure to help build the bridge that begins a solid relationship between the home and school.

Lesson Two – Getting Started

Understanding families are from diverse backgrounds, Parent Mentors will utilize the Home and Parent Questionnaire© to form their instruction as they implement the Together We Learn curriculum. These assessment tools measure the parent’s progress. Assessing progress is crucial in helping parents evolve. Parent Mentors will continue to shape a trusting, professional relationship between home and school.

Lesson Three – Get Ready, Get Set, Goals

Parents continue to grow as they set a plan in a motion - transforming wishes into realities. Recognizing parents are vital in the success children experience in school and life, Parent Mentors assist parents in setting, measuring, and tracking short and long-term goals. Alphabet knowledge activities will be introduced and a review of new terms learned will be conducted.

Lesson Four – Promoting Literacy In The Home

The focal point of this lesson is helping parents integrate the role of teacher and parent. Parents are empowered with vocabulary and creative ideas of how and why to promote literacy in the home. Parents begin to understand their role as teacher of their children, and the bridge between home and school gains importance. Lesson Five – Learning With Rhymes

Parents will continue to learn and implement techniques necessary to their children’s reading success. As their children’s teacher, parents will discover how and why rhymes are vital. Parents will learn terms helping them in their role as teacher and how to create teaching moments while having fun with their children. Lesson Six – Words, Words, Words and More Words

Parent Mentors continue supporting parents in their newfound role. Parents forge ahead as they discover ways to increase their children’s phonological awareness helping them make the connection between words and their sounds. Parent Mentors teach ways to set the stage in helping their children develop critical skills necessary to their educational success. The parent’s vision expands and they see the connection between educational practices in the home and school. Lesson Seven – All About Stories

Discovering why children love to have the same book read to them over and over again helps parents understand their children’s attachment to books. Parent Mentors will teach how and why such behavior expands knowledge and vocabulary in a child. The gaps between home and school narrows as parents become their children’s teacher. Lesson Ten – All About Print

Parents continue to apply the techniques learned and discover the many uses of print. Parent Mentors will help parents discover the magic of books and what children learn from them. The change parents are experiencing is evident in the increase of print in the home and in the parents’ awareness of their children’s development. The communication between home and school is sustained and goals continue to be set and accomplished.

Lesson Eleven – My Name Begins With…

Parents will learn the sense of ownership their children have about the first letter in their name as they increase their children’s creativity. Parent Mentors will teach the parents how their children can develop skills through art. Continuing to lay the foundation of educational success as their children’s teacher, parents instill values of responsibility and integrity in their children.

Lesson Twelve – You Are The Builder

As the builders of their children’s educational destiny parents will continue to implement what they have learned to ensure their children’s educational success. Through the administration of the Home and Parent Questionnaire© Parent Mentors will assess the parent’s increase in the areas taught. Parent Mentors now have comparative data to determine parent’s progress.
